Metro Vancouver is proposing a regional sales tax of 0.5 per cent in an effort to provide more funding for TransLink.
The tax is one of five recommendations by the Mayor's Council on Regional Transportation that were given to Transportation Minister Mary Polak.
According to an analysis of potential revenue streams, the regional sales tax could generate an additional $250 million for the transit service's annual budget.
The council has also proposed taking a regional cut of the carbon tax and increased land value along transit corridors, implementing controversial road pricing and adding a vehicle levy that could raise $40 million per year. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and other local mayors met with a panel of international transportation experts in October to discuss the possibility of adding road pricing to their regional districts.
