Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly shot into a crowd of pub patrons, injuring two bouncers at a Maple Ridge bar early Sunday morning.
Ridge Meadows RCMP Insp. David Fluegel said Wednesday police had a local man in custody. The man did not appear to have any gang connections.
The shooting occurred at the Haney Public House around 2 a.m., after one of two men escorted off the property by doormen returned with a gun and opened fire. Two employees were treated by paramedics for non-lifethreatening gunshot wounds to the leg. Police reported Wednesday that one man was still in hospital.
According to Ridge Meadows RCMP, patrols will be stepped up near the Lougheed Highway pub in the coming weeks.
Insp. Fluegel said the pub was not seen as a particular trouble spot.
However, the Haney Public House complex, which includes the Haney Hotel, CaddyShack exotic dance lounge and liquor store, has been the site of several police incidents.
In March 2011, police were called when two men got into a fight in the liquor store. A 38-year-old was charged with assault.
That May, a Mission man got a concussion after being hit outside the pub. The suspect fled.
And in November 2011, a 23-year-old hit a man with a bottle in the parking lot of the hotel. The suspect was charged with assault.
In December 2012, a dispute between two groups of people in the pub at closing time led to at least 40 patrons and staff being engulfed in pepper spray. Two men were detained by police and the gang task force was notified.
In an attempt to reduce such incidents, Maple Ridge licensed businesses, including the Haney Public House, revived Bar Watch in April 2011. Members agreed to ban patrons wearing gang clothing and to prohibit weapons.
