The Simon Fraser University swimming teams both suffered defeats to the Seattle University Redhawks on Friday evening with the men losing their dual meet 116-88 and the women falling 111-88.

The Clan had some solid swims, including from Pitt Meadows native Ciaran McDonnell, but Seattle used their depth and won some key swims to pull out the victory.

Despite not being able to pull out individual victories the men did have some outstanding swims as three individual all-time SFU dual meet records were set.

McDonnell's time of 1:52.87 broke an 11-year old record in the butterfly stroke while Julian Monks' time of 2:05.95 set a new standard in the breaststroke and Ajax, Ont.'s Greg Laughlin's time of 1:50.59 broke a record set in 1995 in the backstroke.

In a thrilling opening race, the SFU men won the 200-yard medley relay by 14/100ths of a second.

Kevin Nickerson of Calgary, then continued the strong start for SFU with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, turning in a time of 9:55.75.

Things did not go as well for SFU the rest of the way though.

Only McDonnell, and Julian Monks from Whitby, Ont., managed to take event wins over the next eight swims with victories in the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard breaststroke respectively.

Like the men, the SFU women's team also opened with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay event.

From there, the Clan women went on to win six of nine individual events but Seattle regained the lead, earning points thanks to their depth in the final three individual events.

The race of the day may have been the women's 200-yard freestyle relay, where the Redhawks edged out the Clan by 16/100ths of a second.

Freshman Grace Ni of Prince George, broke an SFU record in the 200-yard backstroke with her time of 2:04.11, picking up the win for SFU in that event.

The women's 200-yard medley relay team of Ni, Katie McEvoy of Victoria, Alexandria Schofield of Coquitlam, and Kristine Lawson of Coquitlam, broke the Clan record in that event, set in 2003, with their time of 1:47.90.

Carmen Nam from Hong Kong, China, had a great day for the Clan, winning three individual events with victories in the 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle, as well as the 200-yard fly.
