Maple Ridge's Quantum Gymnastics Centre competitive trampoline and tumbling team came back with a vengeance this past weekend at the first BC Cup competition of the year.

The last time Quantum's very successful competitive program brought home medals was four years ago, before the program was discontinued. In September 2012 the program resurfaced with a crop of new, young, talented athletes.

Four girls and three boys brought home four medals. Leading the field was Cody Marthaller, winning gold in tumbling, silver on double-mini and placed fourth on trampoline.

Twelve-year-old Anna Hawboldt, followed closely with a bronze medal on trampoline and a fourth place on double-mini.

Emily Smolik placed fifth on trampoline and ninth in double-mini.

In the younger boys levels Harling Koughan just missed the podium on double-mini placing fourth and ninth on trampoline. Liam Latchman was seventh on double-mini and eighth on trampoline.

The youngest group, competing in the 10-years and younger category, also impressed the coaches. At this, their first competition, nerves were a definite factor, Sidney Gjaltema won bronze, on double-mini and tenth on trampoline. Kayla Bilodeau was 11th on trampoline and twelfth on double-mini, Makayla Tab was eleventh on double-mini.

The coaches are Kristi Smith and Chelsey Herman, both previous members of the Quantum Competitive team.

"They can certainly bring a good understanding to the challenges for these youngsters just starting out on their athletic career," said head coach June Booth.

"I am really happy to once again have a team out their representing Quantum, we have definitely been missed in the competitive events over these past four years," she added.

The next competition for the team will be the 2nd BC Cup hosted at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park on Feb. 22 to 24.
