Pitt Meadows may be a smaller community, but it's big when it comes to producing national-level golfers.

Justin Shin and Kevin Kwon, both from Pitt Meadows, made their respective Canadian teams.

Shin was among those named to represent Canada as part of the 2013 national amateur golf team.

Shin joins the national team for the first time after a strong collegiate season at New Mexico State University.

He recorded seven top-five finishes at New Mexico State last season as a junior and was selected to compete at the NCAA Division I west regional championship, where he finished tied for 27th.

The 21-year-old finished tied for 14th at the 2012 Canadian men's amateur championship and also captured medalist honours at the Northeast amateur championship.

He advanced through to the Round of 32 at the 2012 U.S. men's amateur championship and is currently the 114th-ranked amateur in the world.

In all, 11 athletes comprise Team Canada's national amateur squad, including six on the men's side and five on the women's squad.

The team will feature six returning team members, one player making the jump from the 2012 development squad, and four newcomers.

Shin is one of three newcomers to the men's team, Chris Hemmerich of Kitchener, Ont. and Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont. being the others.

The team is led by Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont., the 2012 Canadian University/College champion, as well as former Nova Scotia men's amateur and Nova Scotia junior boys champion Eric Banks of Truro, N.S., all of whom return as members of Team Canada.

"We are very excited about the group of young men and women selected to participate in the national amateur team program and represent Team Canada in 2013," said Jeff Thompson, Golf Canada's chief sport development officer. "It is our mandate to support these players in helping them achieve their goals for excellence within the sport. Whether competing internationally, nationally, provincially, or as members of their respective collegiate teams, each of these athletes has earned the right to represent Canada in 2013."

Golf Canada also named a 22and-under development squad which features six male and five female athletes. The development squad is designed to help facilitate the continued development of Canada's top young players.

KWON CAPTURES SPOT

Kwon returns for his second year with the development team after a summer of solid performances.

His season was highlighted by a runner-up finish at the 2012 Canadian junior boys championship after firing a final round six-under-par 66.

The 17-year-old also finished in a tie for 14th at the Canadian men's amateur championship.

Earlier this year, Kwon tied for third at both the B.C. amateur championship and the B.C. junior boys championship. He also finished tied for second at the CN Future Links Pacific championship.
