Maple Ridge Lawnbowling Club played host to the men’s provincials this past weekend.
In what Maple Ridge team leader George Cubiss described as a close contest, his trio (also consisting of Peter Davies and Tony Webster) managed to bring home the bronze.
“If you get a medal, you’ve done well,” Cubiss told The TIMES just after the tournament wrapped up Sunday. “Today, we just didn’t quite put it all together,” he added, not at all disappointed with what he said was a great showing on his team’s part. This Maple Ridge trio has been playing together since 2003.
The weekend of competition began Friday, with 10 teams from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland coming to play.
There were three teams from Maple Ridge, two from White Rock, two from Parksville, one from Nanaimo, one from North Vancouver, and the winners from Richmond.
Cubiss’ local team was the last local team left standing by Sunday morning, but they fell to the ultimate gold-winning Richmond team made up of Michael Shea, Peter Cheon, and San Wan.
The Richmond trio then went on to defeat Christie Grahame’s White Rock team later that same afternoon, leaving White Rock with silver standing.
The provincial championships in lawnbowling continue early this week, with the ladies tournament running Monday through Wednesday.
