When Team Canada heads to Chile, South America to compete in the Pan-American Youth Championships in November, four locals will be on the team who train at The Rock Wall Climbing Gym in Maple Ridge.
Christy Spurrell, Carly Turner, and Jarred Plamondon from Maple Ridge, and Sara Hopkins of Pitt Meadows will ramp up their training in preparation for the event.
This will be 19-year-old Spurrell's last youth competition, as she ages out after this event. She will be competing in the adult open division later this season.
"She has had an impressive youth career, consistently ranking in the top five in Canada, since starting her competition career at the age of eight," said coach Terry Spurrell.
Throughout her career, she has competed for Team Canada in Denver, Montreal, and twice in Ecuador.
Plamondon, 18, competed for Canada in Scotland and Austria.
"He's eager to get back to competing for Canada after coming off a wrist injury that sidelined him for both regionals and nationals last spring," explained the coach.
"Turner is ready for this event. This will be her first international event since she competed in Montreal four years ago. She is going to be leveraging off her best nationals ever last spring, finishing fourth in Canada in her age category," said Spurrell.
Hopkins made Team Canada in her second year of competition.
"She had an up-and-down season last year, but had a very strong nationals that qualified her for her first-ever international event," said Spurrell.
