A local sports hero has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal.

Nathan Stein, who brought a silver medal home from the 2012 London Paralympics, was one of 58 athletes honoured with the jubilee medal.

Brent Hayden, a swimmer who grew up in Maple Ridge but who now lives in Mission, was also awarded for his bronze medal in men’s 100-metre freestyle in swimming at the 2012 London Olympics.

Bal Gosal, the minister of state for sport, said he is a big Team Canada fan and “could not be more proud” of the group.

“They showed the world what they could do and made Canada proud. It is only fitting that today, in Her Majesty’s honour, we recognize the achievements of these exceptional athletes who have worked hard to serve their communities and country,” he said.

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is one of many ways in which the federal government is celebrating the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne.

A total of 60,000 medals are being awarded to Canadians. Presentations took place throughout 2012 and will continue until Feb. 28, the date when the program closes.
