Two wheeled riding will the theme this weekend, as Race the Ridge returns to town, presented by Local Ride Racing.

The three-part event sees the big finishing race take place on Sunday in Maple Ridge, but the event is technically a three-day affair, with a reach that stretches beyond just the downtown core.

Tomorrow, April 29, the time trials take place at Barnston Island, in Surrey.

On Saturday, the Hatzic Valley Road Race takes place in Hatzic, and on Sunday, it all comes to a head in downtown Maple Ridge with the Town Core Criterium.

“We have always looked for new courses to keep things interesting for the riders,” said Local Ride’s Barry Lyster, the race organizer.

And this approach seems to be working, as Lyster anticipates “close to 200 riders for each event,” this year.

“Last year, we had a huge leap in numbers.”

Also new for this year is the fact that Race the Ridge will run as an omnium event, as well as allowing entries into individual races.

A Cycling BC event Race the Ridge is one of the longest-running cycling races in the province, Lyster said.

“Quality courses, great local scenery, and even the tough, challenging nature of our races keeps it popular,” he added.

And with riders racing a “closed, short course” in downtown Maple Ridge, “there is never a dull moment for riders and fans alike.”

And for those who come out to watch the race,  “this the best free entertainment you will ever get,” he added.

Registration for the event is now closed, and there is no day-of registration.
