Two women in their 20s needed saving after they jumped into the Fraser River for a swim at the Port Haney Wharf just after 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A passing boat plucked them from the Fraser River, near from the Billy Miner Pub.

"They got into trouble with the strong current, and swollen river level, and had to cling onto a log to keep afloat," said Ridge Meadows RCMP Sgt. Dale Somerville.

The women were rescued by a boater who threw out a life preserver to where they were clinging and picked them up out of the water.

The boater left before police could find out his identity.

"This unknown boater is truly a hero in this incident. According to our police officers, the women were in serious danger and could have easily drowned if not for the actions of this citizen," praised Somerville.

"We would like to find out who he is and thank him for his quick thinking."

Police want to remind citizens to be careful in and around rivers and lakes. At this time the river has a higher than usual water level, and the current is strong, as is evident in this case.

Police are asking for this boater, or anyone who may know who he is, to call 604-463-6251.
