Two pedestrians were hit on Maple Ridge streets Wednesday, one requiring medical attention.

The first accident occurred near Thomas Haney Secondary at about 8:30 a.m., in the 23000 block of 116th Ave.

A woman, not a student, was struck by a vehicle and taken to hospital by ambulance with what police believe were “non-life-threatening injuries,” said Sgt. Dale Somerville.

In the meantime, police were also dispatched to another pedestrian accident downtown, just after noon.

That accident occurred at 224th Street and Selkirk Avenue at about 12:15 p.m.

Police files indicate a man was struck by a car travelling at low speed through the intersection. The pedestrian was apparently not injured.

“Police want to remind motorists that inclement weather does reduce visibility, as well as the time it takes to stop,” Somerville said.

“Slowing down gives drivers that little extra time to both notice other vehicles and pedestrians, as well as giving the time it takes to stop.

“We also urge pedestrians to be aware of traffic when crossing, or entering, onto the travelled roadway, and give drivers a chance to see them.”

November is a “speed relative to conditions” awareness enforcement month for police.

Somerville advises people to look for Ridge Meadows RCMP’s traffic services to be out in the communities.

“With the end of Daylight Savings this weekend (Nov. 4) we have less daylight driving time, which relates to less visibility when we drive,” he said. “Our goal is to make our roads among the safest in the world.”
