This Saturday will be celebration of sustainability and Girl Guides at Memorial Peace Park.

Organizers of GETI (Golden Ears Transition Initiative) Fest in Maple Ridge thought their event would clash with the Girl Guides International Day of the Girl festivities - until the two groups realized they have a lot in common and joined forces to put on GETI Fest this Saturday.

"[There are] a lot of parallels between them and us," said GETI Fest organizer Gerry Pinel.

This year's festival will include four "villages" or areas. There will be an eco-village that showcases GETI action group, community organizations, and local businesses, an artisan village with 30 exhibitors, a village with the regular Saturday Haney Farmers Market, and the fourth village put on by the Girl Guides.

"It's a pretty ambitious festival this year," Pinel said.

GETI Fest starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m.

At 11 a.m. there will be an "organic" parade, Pinel said, where everyone is invited to join in and circle around Memorial Peace Park on any mode of transportation that isn't powered by fossil fuels.

From noon to 2 p.m. there will be a bike rodeo

Entertainment will include a puppet theatre, the Raging Grannies, and several local entertainers.

GETI is an organization that promotes sustainable, resilient, and vibrant communities and the festival is meant to showcase its many facets.

"It's also a celebration of all the things happening in the community," Pinel said.
