Industrial development should be the primary focus for a site known as Alouette Estate, or Cardiff Farm, according to a new economic development review.
Kate Zanon, Pitt Meadows Economic Development Corporation (PMEDC) CEO, told Mayor Deb Walters and council at a council-in-committee meeting last week that preserving Alouette Estate for industrial development allows for a rare economic opportunity for Pitt Meadows.
"I realize how valuable and rare that parcel is... We need to ask 'what's viable?'" said Walters.
Alouette Estates presents the opportunity to attract high-quality regional industrial companies, the review stated.
Earlier this fall, Mosaic Homes made a presentation to City council about the future vision of the Harris Road property. It offered three options: industrial use only, industrial and residential uses, and third, mixed industrial, commercial, campus, and residential uses.
PMEDC was asked to review the Mosaic Homes presentation.
The PMEDC review pointed out that new homes would increase the long-term maintenance burden on the City.
The review also said that an industrial development would create job opportunities, provide space for businesses to grow, and spread out the tax burden on existing businesses and residents.
Councillor Tracy Miyashita said that she would like to have more discussions in the new year.
"I would like to do a workshop regarding how to be creative, but still support business," the councillor said.
