Two Maple Ridge women are training in the trades, and will be involved in building a shed to benefit the Lions Club.
The New Westminster Lions Club and Women in Trades Training are organizing a Gardener's Grand Slam Raffle.
The prize in the contest is an installed 8' X 8' garden shed built by a group of women intent upon constructing new lives for themselves while acquiring trade skills that will be the ticket to improving their lives.
Raffle tickets are being sold for $5 with this major and two smaller prizes and are available from the New West Lions or through both New West branches of Scotiabank (Sixth Street at Fifth Avenue or Columbia Street at Begbie Street).
The finished garden shed will be built from blue prints to final product by 18 women at Sapperton Hall in early February.
Team leader Don Laslo, a Red Seal carpenter by trade, will mentor their skills step by step to provide them with confidence as they see the finished building emerge.
The women come from six municipalities in the Lower Mainland coordinated by UFCW 247 Training Centre on a program funded through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement.
The draw date is Feb. 13 at the new Westminster Lions regular meeting at Boston Pizza, 1045 Columbia St., New Westminster. Drawtime is 7:15 pm.
