Canada’s brave men and women in uniform who pay the ultimate sacrifice in defence of their country deserve to be laid to rest respectfully, with support from the federal government for their families.

That’s why a funeral and burial program is provided to veterans through the Last Post Fund.

Since our government was first elected in 2006, over 10,000 veterans and their families have benefitted from this program.

It’s surprising to me that Liberal MPs would bring this issue up [(Veterans: Country letting them down, Feb. 21 Letters, www.mrtimes.com] when this is the same program the Liberal Party shamefully cut years ago.

Meanwhile, our government has brought in other benefits and services for veterans at an unprecedented level over the last seven years. For example, the New Veterans Charter and the Veterans Transition Action Plan are helping veterans transition into civilian life.

And while we are always interested in looking at ways we can improve our programs, the Liberals just cannot escape their treatment of the members of Canada’s military and veterans.

Our government stands strongly behind our brave veterans and their families.
