Two serving members of Ridge Meadows RCMP have completed United Nations Peacekeeping duties in Khandahar, Afghanistan.

National Peacekeepers Day on Aug. 9 was a day dedicated to remembering United Nations Peacekeepers.

Staff Sgt. Maj. Andrew Martin and Corp. Todd Balaban each did nine months in the troubled country.

Both took part in training police officers in that country.

Often their duties would put them in harm's way in order to complete their tasks.

"Certainly there were times when I felt my safety was in jeopardy, but we all looked after one another as best we could," Martin said about his 2009 mission.
