A teenage boy who took photos of an alleged sexual assault at a Pitt Meadows rave in September 2010 has been sentenced to probation.

The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, entered a guilty plea in December on one of two counts he was facing. He was sentenced Friday in B.C. provincial court in Port Coquitlam.

At the Sept. 10 and 11 rave called "Another Night in Bangkok," a 16-year-old girl allegedly was sexually assaulted, possibly by more than one boy, while a group of young people watched.

The young man admitted to photographing and videotaping the incident on his BlackBerry.

Although he did not post it on Facebook, he passed the material on to friends who did.

Judge Pedro de Couto emphasized in his decision the harm that was done to the victim and he said time will tell if she and her family will heal.

"Much as [the youth] may want to turn back time and take back what he has done ... he cannot," Judge de Couto said.

He said the young man has "matured significantly" since the incident and is remorseful for his actions, the potential consequences of which he did not appreciate at the time.

The teen was sentenced to 12 months of probation, during which he must write an essay of at least 1,500 words and a letter of apology.

"I expect a real essay," Judge de Couto said.

Outside court, the victim's father called the sentence "a slap on the wrist."

Two more trials are pending in 2012 in the case. Dennis John Allen Warrington, 19, of Langley, is charged with production and distribution of child pornography and is scheduled for trial beginning Sept. 24. Colton Ashton McMorris, 18, of Maple Ridge, is charged with sexual assault and is to go to trial on Feb. 27.
