Police are making sure all young drivers are adhering to the restrictions of their licences with a series of checks around the community.

Police targeted areas near three local high schools on Wednesday and issued 15 tickets for various violations.

“The majority of the tickets were for failing to display the ‘N’ sign, with seven novice drivers getting tickets,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop.

“Others received violation tickets for carrying more than one passenger, failing to wear their seat belt, and one for using a cell phone while driving,” she continued.

All drivers with a learners permit must display the red ‘L’ sign on the back of the vehicle they are driving, and they must be accompanied by a fully-licenced driver who is 25 years or older, who is seated in the front passenger seat.

A learner can only drive a vehicle between 5 a.m. and midnight, and can only have one, non-relative passenger in addition to the licenced supervisor.

A learner cannot use a cell phone, even with a hands-free device.

The next step on the graduated licencing program is the novice permit.

After successful completion of a road test, a young driver can achieve a novice licence.

The novice driver must display a green ‘N’ sign on the rear of the vehicle he or she is driving.

The novice driver is not to carry more than one passenger, except when they have an adult supervisor who is 25 years of age or older, and then they can have more passengers. This does not include immediate family members.

A novice cannot use a cell phone, even with a hands-free device.
