Children who want to play sports, but can’t afford to, will benefit from the Orange You Glad You Helped A Kid fundraiser being held at Thrifty Foods.

With a goal to send as many kids as possible into a season of sport, for the next three weeks Thrifty Foods will donate to KidSport $1 from the sale of every four-pound bag of organic Buck Brand oranges.

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to build a relationship with Thrifty Foods. Together we can make a difference to a great many young people in our community,” said Len Walters, KidSport chair.

“The community is behind this fundraiser and are eager to contribute their $1 to KidSport. Everyone is impressed by Buck Brand oranges – they are very sweet and juicy,” explained Walters.

“KidSport is a fantastic organization. I believe that every kid, regardless of their financial situation, should be allowed to play organized sports,” said Arran Henn, who was at Thrifty’s Maple Ridge location broadcasting on QMFM.

In 2012 the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows KidSport chapter contributed $39,000 to help 170 kids participate in the sport of their choice.

KidSport sponsored kids in ball hockey, baseball, bowling, boxing, canoe/kayak, figure skating, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, karate, lacrosse, martial arts, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, and water polo.

The Buck Brand grower, Lisle Babcock will be at Thrifty’s on Feb. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m.

A few other events that support KidSport are coming up in the community. On April 27 there will be a Pub Night Fundraiser at Haney Public House. On May 17, 18, 19 there will be a ball hockey tournament, and on July 8 there will be the third annual Wes Durkson Golf Tournament.
