Thanks to generous funding from the Pacific Salmon Foundation, the Allco Fish Hatchery will have a new roof on the main building in short order.

Work started last week to replace the roof.

During the past six years, aging roofs were replaced on the electrical, incubation, and green workshop buildings as well as the hatchery office - again thanks to funding from the Pacific Salmon Foundation. Now it's time for the main building.

A variety of activities occur in this structure, including fin clipping, tours, and rearing and incubation for coho, chinook and chum salmon.

During heavy rains, some portions of the roof let in a steady stream of water.

Fraser Valley Corrections Centre staff and inmates are stripping off the old cedar shingles, doing any needed repairs to the structure, then installing a new roof to match the others on the complex.

The work is expected to take up to four weeks to complete and the hatchery will host an open house later this summer to celebrate the upgrades over the past six years including a new generator, also to arrive this summer.

Corrections staff will supervise all aspects of the work and inmates will contribute labour.
