Neep, tatties, and haggies will be on offer this Saturday as Scots and wannabe Scots celebrate the birthday of the poet who penned Auld Lang Syne.
A Robbie Burns Supper will be hosted by the Port Coquitlam Legion Pipe Band at Pitt Meadows Golf Club this Saturday night.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the official birthday of Scotland's famous poet, Robert Burns, and it's become a tradition to celebrate his birthday with traditional fare.
Burns, called simply the Bard in Scotland, was a Romantic poet who lived in the late 18th century and wrote both in English and in the Scottish language.
At the supper, the Port Coquitlam Legion Pipe Band, which is a regular feature at Pitt Meadows Day and the Santa Claus Parade in Maple Ridge, will pipe in the haggis, creating a Scottish ambiance with six pipers and several drummers.
There will also be dancing by the Stave Falls Scottish Dancers who regularly dance at Robbie Burns events around the community.
Haggis, which is traditionally made from beef organs with oatmeal and spices and cooked in a sheep's stomach, will be served at the supper.
"The old Scots wouldn't waste any meat," said Noreen Applegath, one of the pipers with the legion pipe band.
She will eat haggis at the Robbie Burns Supper, although she's not overly enthusiastic about it.
"Put some gravy on it and you can swallow it," she said.
The supper also includes traditional toasts to the laddies and lassies.
Robbie Burns Supper takes place at the Pitt Meadows Golf Course, 13615 Harris Rd. Tickets are $50.
Doors open at 6: 30 p.m. and the festivities begin at 7 p.m.
