They wanted to show there are more good people than bad in the community.

About 100 people came together on Sunday for a fundraiser to support a 17-year-old Grade 12 Westview Secondary student who had been kidnapped and assaulted.

Alex, who works part-time as a food runner at Fox's Reach Pub was attacked, abducted, and assaulted on Jan. 19 at Westgate Mall.

While outside on a coffee break, she was approached by a man allegedly needing help to jump start his vehicle. She agreed to help, but suddenly found herself being forced at gunpoint to drive a short distance away in her own car, where she was subsequently beaten before managing to escape and run for help.

Sunday afternoon's fundraiser was all about healing and giving thanks. The event was arranged by her family to thank all those involved with Alex's safe return.

The fundraiser was "great," said Josh Flett, owner of Fox's Reach.

"It was great to see the community out there. It was nice to see a good thing come from a bad thing," Flett said.

At the fundraiser, Maple Ridge Chrysler owner Ian Speckman presented Alex with a 2004 PT Cruiser.

Speckman said he hopes the gift will help her get on with her life.

"I hope she enjoys the car," said Speckman, who shied away from any publicity about his generosity. "I wanted to help the kid out. It was important to help her out, to help her get her life back on track."

Alex's 1993 Honda Civic had been doused in gasoline during the attack, and she didn't want to see it again, as it brought back terrible memories, explained family friend Jennifer Strain.

"She doesn't ever want to be in that car again," Strain said. "He beat her in there and doused it with gas. Maybe he was going to torch it."

Speckman said Alex is "a very nice girl."

"She seemed really excited," he said after giving her the PT Cruiser. "She was very appreciative and respectful."

According to Flett, Alex was back at work as of Tuesday, Feb. 12.

"She's really happy. She's a strong girl," Flett said.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old Surrey man has been charged with four criminal counts in connection with the violent attack.

Ian James William Campbell has been remanded in custody and will be back in Port Coquitlam provincial court via video for a bail hearing next Thursday, Feb. 21.

The list of charges include kidnapping using a weapon, attempting to choke to overcome resistance, assault causing bodily harm, and unlawful confinement or imprisonment.

Campbell has been in trouble with the law in past, according to police.
