Flooding has caused the closure of 224th Street north of 132nd Avenue in Maple Ridge as the North Alouette River rises quickly.

District of Maple Ridge staff closed off the road this morning as the water on it was too deep to drive through, and they are recommending drivers take Foreman Road instead.

The rising water is due to the heavy rainfall but also runoff from melting snow as the temperatures have risen rapidly as well.

District staff is also cautioning that there is standing water along 132nd west of 224th and are asking drivers to avoid the strip if possible.

Bridges throughout the District will be inspected throughout the weekend by engineering and operations staff, said District communications manager Fred Armstrong.

The District of Maple Ridge will post any updates on Facebook and on the twitter handle @AlouetteRiver.
