First time out of the gate, a Family Day festival in Pitt Meadows on Monday is being hailed a success.

"We were extremely happy with the turnout," said one of the organizers, Denean McLelland.

Monday marked the first time B.C. has celebrated Family Day as a statutory holiday, and the Pitt Meadows Community Association chose to host an afternoon of games and movie watching at the Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall. About 175 people turned out, McLelland said.

"This event saw families playing games together, children involved in activities, adults talking together, and seniors enjoying the movie," she noted.

Given the turnout, McLelland believes this family festival will live on.

"With more donations, we are hoping this is something that we can do every year for the community," she added.

Next up, the association is celebrating the luck of the Irish at Meadowvale Shopping Centre on March 17.
