The federal riding of Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission will be reduced by one community, if changes to election boundaries go through, becoming the riding of Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge.

Tweaks to an original plan put out last summer keeps Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge intact as one riding, dropping Mission, which will be included in a new riding called Mission-Matsqui.

The federal government proposed changes to electoral boundaries last summer that would have included a portion of Port Coquitlam – Citadel Heights – and would have cut the riding at 240th Street, splitting Maple Ridge residents into two ridings.

The eastern portion of Maple Ridge would have been in the Mission-Matsqui riding.

The new proposal, announced on Monday, divides the riding at 287th Street instead of at 240th Street.

“We’re pleased it’s Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows intact,” said Mike Murray, constituency assistant for Randy Kamp, the MP who represents Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and Mission.

The goal is to have the proposed changes go through by the summer before Parliament breaks for summer, Murray said. The electoral boundary changes added six ridings to British Columbia.

The changes were made to keep ridings at about 100,000 residents in each.

Kamp resides in Maple Ridge.
