After Friday, the Pitt Meadows Marauders have community bragging rights when it comes to high school varsity football.
In the inaugural Alouette Bowl held under the lights at Pitt Meadows Secondary's turf field, the Marauders downed the Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary Titans 42-3. The Titans took an early lead on a first quarter field goal, but the Marauders responded quickly, racking up 28 unanswered points to take a 28-3 lead into the halftime break. "We played well,"
Marauders assistant coach Bruno Chu said. "We didn't want to give up those points early, but it happens. We responded well and the players stepped up and we were able to finish the game off the way we wanted to, obviously."
This was a historic game, pitting against each other the only two schools in the district that offer varsity (senior) football to their respective students.
The win improves the Marauders record to 2-1, while the 0-3 Titans, who started their varsity program this fall, are still searching for their first win of the campaign.
Both teams play in the B.C. High School Football Eastern Conference.
Chu said roughly 400 people took in the game and the atmosphere was a fun one.
"A lot of people came to the game," Chu said. "We've been slowly building a tradition."
SRT has beaten the Marauders each of the past two years at the junior varsity level so the Pitt Meadows squad wasn't taking the game lightly.
"It'll be more competitive next year, but we still feel we will come out on top," Chu said.
The Marauders will be tested this Saturday, Oct. 12, when they travel to Abbotsford's Rick Hansen Secondary to take on 3-0 Hurricanes with a 1:30 p.m. opening kickoff.
Their next home game is Friday, Oct. 18, hosting Robert Bateman under the lights at PMSS. Opening kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
The Titans will try to get into the win column this Friday, Oct. 11, when they host the Mission Roadrunners. Game time at SRT is 7 p.m.
The following Saturday, Oct. 19, SRT heads down to Rick Hansen for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
