Maple Ridge native and SRT grad Alex Rowley is back on the soccer pitch at SFU for his second year running as the university team, the Clan, kicks off its season. The men’s soccer team won two exhibition games in California over the weekend.
Playing on the same pitch that the team won the program's first NCAA tournament game on last season, the Simon Fraser University men's soccer team got the 2013 season started with a win, defeating the Cal-State East Bay Pioneers 2-1 on Thursday.
Then the soccer team wrapped up their non-conference trip to California with a 4-3 win over the Holy Name Hawks on Saturday afternoon.
The second game was played in extreme heat, with action being halted for water breaks several times.
“We played in excessive heat in this game but it didn’t really impact the outcome,” said Head Coach Alan Koch. “Our mentality was lacking. We went up by two in the first half but we let them back in it. In the second half we had our best five minutes of the game and scored a couple goals but we let them back in it again.”
SFU’s women’s soccer team, which includes Pitt Meadows’ Brianna Morrison, however, lost its two exhibition games. First, they lost 6-0 against California State University Stanislaus Warriors on Thursday. They then fell in their second and final game of non-conference action on Saturday evening 2-1 against the Academy of Art Urban Knights.
