Tammy McNabb and her seven-year-old daughter Vanessa entered the Haney Farmers Market Apple Pie Baking contest and won.

Vanessa had her friend Victoria over from her new school, Pacific Academy, and they thought it would be fun to bake a couple of pies together.

"I made the crust and had the girls assisted me in measuring and stirring the pie filling," said Tammy.

"We baked two pies, ate one and set the other aside for entry the following morning."

And the judging began. "We waited, they tasted - we kept our eye on the chef from Big Feast Bistro and the mayor who seemed to be having extra bites of our pie."

The judges removed the pies, one by one, to another table, leaving only the winning pie.

"We won the red ribbon for best youth pie and the blue ribbon for Grand Master Pie Baker."
