Westview Secondary's Terry Fox Run is on Thursday, Sept. 27, and the public is invited to take part and lend support.
The afternoon event at Westview, 20905 Wicklund Ave., begins with a school assembly at 12:30 p.m. featuring two cancer survivors.
At 12:55 p.m. Tawnie Richardson of Total Body Training will lead a warmup on the WSS soccer field.
At 1:10 p.m. the run/walk begins with senior fitness and conditioning classes leading the five-kilometre run. There will be a five-kilometre or a 1.5-kilometre option.
Prior to the run, WSS students will be placing stakes in the ground with Terry Fox's diary entries along the route that the Glenwood elementary participants will walking, to get to the run. Students will also be assisting with the crossing at Laity.
During the run, there will be at least three RCMP cars closing down lanes to ensure the safety of all participants, noted says Josh Carriss from WSS.
Westview students will be at strategic spots along the route to direct, cheer and hand out water, as well as WSS tattoos and other items.
Thrifty Foods has supplied hotdogs and drinks for all involved. These will be sold with all proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation.
The Maple Ridge Fire Department will most likely be attending with a fire truck, Carriss said.
As well, WSS students will be organizing a number of games for the elementary students and will be taking part in "house" competitions including a tug of war, and a Grade 12 hotdog eating contest.
