This Saturday, firefighters will be fighting more than just fire.
They will also fight for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, by holding a boot drive.
On Sept. 29, Pitt Meadows firefighters will be around town, hoping that people will drop their extra change into a firefighter's boot in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
To show their support for people with neuromuscular disorders, local firefighters have organized a community boot drive to raise awareness and funds to help "make muscles move," according to assistant fire chief Brad Perrie, with Pitt Meadows Fire & Rescue Service.
He first got involved with the boot drive in 1996.
"We always hope to make more than the previous year," said Perrie, adding that the first year they raised $610 and 15 years later they raised 10 times that - around $7,000.
Two Pitt Meadows boys - Jordan Wright and Riley Jonatschick - who have muscular dystrophy, have made a big impact on the local firefighters.
"Since we learned that these boys live in our community, the fire department has stepped up and supported MD."
There will be about 20 firefighters and four trucks in four locations Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
They will be at Meadowvale Shopping Centre, 19150 Lougheed Hwy., and at Meadowtown Centre, 19800 Lougheed Hwy.
At around 8: 30 p.m. the firefighters will drive their trucks in front of the Meadowtown movie theatre and then do a "pub crawl" hitting the Jolly Coachman and Roosters.
