Maple Ridge won't be requesting quotes for municipal garbage pickup.
A motion, put forward by Councillor Corisa Bell was quashed at Tuesday's Maple Ridge council meeting.
Bell wanted to know the cost of having garbage pickup service. But only she, Coun. Bob
Masse, and Coun. Michael Morden voted in favour.
Bell said when she was door knocking for the municipal election, it was a topic that came up all the time - even people who were happy with municipal services often said, "the only thing I'd really like is municipal garbage pickup."
Bell said the District's citizen survey reported that 41 per cent of Maple Ridge residents said they wanted municipal garbage pickup.
When she asked the municipal lawyer if it was appropriate to put out a request for information, she said the lawyer told her it was.
But Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said he doesn't think companies would respond to a request for quotes. A referendum on garbage was discussed, however, and Daykin said it might be something council could look at.
