An SUV ended up in a water-filled ditch on the Haney Bypass on Monday and one person had to be taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as a result.

Other than that, the snow has played a part in seven other "minor calls," according to Maple Ridge assistant fire chief Howard Exner.

"It's pretty darn quiet, actually," Exner said.

The top priority for Pitt Meadows road crews is keeping roads with deep ditches safe for drivers.

While some communities have to deal with dangerous hills during snowy weather, Pitt Meadows has ditches to deal with, which the City's operations superintendent Randy Evans said is "as bad if not worse."

Therefore, the #1 priority route for Pitt Meadows road crews has been Dewdney Trunk Road, which is used as an alternate commuter route, but has deep ditches on each side of the road.

The second priority is the "bog area," the Kennedy and Ford roads which also has deep ditches on both sides and is used by drivers trying to avoid traffic on Lougheed Highway.

"We tend to pay close attention to [those areas]," Evans said.

Pitt Meadows Road crews were kept busy on Saturday when the first large snowfall came, going at it "with some force," Evans said, adding that they were able to jump ahead of the situation at that point.

"For the most part, I think we're ahead of it," Evans said.

With the mercury hitting almost 10 degrees below zero on Wednesday, however, Evans said the concern is whether salt is effective for getting rid of the snow. If it continues to be cold, the road crews will mix sand with salt to make the roads safer.

Sand will be used if necessary, Evans said, but he'd prefer not to because of the heavy cleanup necessary afterwards.

Russ Carmichael, director of operations with the District of Maple Ridge, is hoping residents will keep catch basins open for when the snow starts to melt to help avoid flooding.

"The good news for Maple Ridge is we haven't been as hard hit as areas in the east," Carmichael said.

Drivers should be extra cautious, however, at stop signs, which often get compacted, slick conditions, Carmichael said. They should also watch out for pedestrian crosswalks which can get obscured by snow.

Public schools in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have not called any snow days but Maple Ridge Christian School was closed on Tuesday and Wednesday because of the snowy conditions.

Meadowridge School hasn't been closed as their buses have been able to get around despite the weather.

Environment Canada is forecasting cloudy condition for Thursday with temperatures between minus three and minus eight. They are forecasting snow or rain on Friday with temperatures between plus three and minus six.

Saturday and Sunday will see showers with temperature on the plus-side between four and seven degrees.
