For the third year, hope will be provided to those who need it through a program called Help Portrait. Part of a global program, the Ridge Meadows Help
Portrait events have contributed to more than 280,000 portraits done around the world for those who simply can't afford to have their photo taken professionally.
It's a full day of people coming through for makeup, hair, smiles, a photo-session, and feeling good. Each individual or family leaves with their own professional portrait.
This year, organizers Brenda Garcia and Andrea Walker hope the event will double the number of guests served last year, but they need help.
"Each year we do this on a minimal budget," Garcia said. "It would really help if we could get local businesses to donate even a small amount of funds. It would put us in a better position to help more people."
Garcia and Walker would also like to see volunteers come forward to help in arranging donations.
"It's a good way to help out for those who can't volunteer the day of Help Portrait," Garcia said.
Help Portrait is founded on the principle that taking time to make people feel good about themselves puts them in a position to do greater things with their lives.
"This may not be about getting food on the table, but this is about helping people feel better and creating self-worth, which then really becomes a way for them to put food on the table," said Garcia.
There aren't a lot of definitions around for who is eligible for portrait sessions. According to Garcia, the event is for anyone (including those who don't live in the community), who doesn't have money for a family portrait or Christmas photo this year.
"We're trying to get a shuttle set up to make it easier for our guests to attend," Garcia added. "The date, time, and place are set. We're very fortunate to have Golden Ears United Church as our location again - same location, but they have a new name."
