Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin hit the radio waves on Friday afternoon to remind people that 30 per cent of clients at the local food bank are children.

The clip was part of a campaign by Overwaitea Food Group - locally represented by Save-On-Foods and Coopers Foods - and Campbell's Canada to raise money for food banks, here benefitting the Friends In Need Food Bank.

The word HUNGER is spelled out with Campbell's soup cans in front of Save-On-Foods at 203rd Street and shoppers are being encouraged to buy the cans and donate them to the food bank to help make hunger disappear.

The campaign continues until Saturday at both Maple Ridge Save-On-Foods locations and Coopers Foods at 240th Street.

So far, Save-On-Foods at Valley Fair Mall has received 642 pounds of food for the food bank and $214 in coupons. Coopers Foods has received 268 pounds of donations and $89 in coupons, and Save-On-Foods at 203rd Street has received 1,566 pounds of food and $522 in coupons.

All the coupons will be matched by Campbell's. Total cash donations so far are $1,172.
