Several charges will be recommended after police arrested a 32-year-old man Wednesday night.

“Police were called to the boat docks at the Katzie First Nation where a citizen had observed two men who appeared to be loading property from a boat into a pickup truck,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop.

Two Mounties approached the area at around 9 p.m. but the suspect, who is well-known to police, tried to drive off.

“The vehicle attempted to cut through a residential property, and the police dog services truck was able to block it. The suspect jumped out of the truck and a short foot pursuit ensued,” explained Dunlop.

During the chase, the suspect kicked a female police officer, but she continued to pursue him and was able to make the arrest. The officer was not injured.

The man was held in custody for a first court appearance today.

Police are recommending charges of possession of stolen property, assaulting a peace officer, prohibited driving, and other motor vehicle act charges.

RCMP support local Bar Watch

The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Bar Watch held an information session regarding public safety on Wednesday afternoon at the South Bonson Recreation Centre.

A number of the Bar Watch participants from licenced establishments attended the meeting, along with Const. Mathew Condon and Const. Mike Moore.

ICBC, BC Liquor Inspector, Go2 (Serving It Right representative), Pitt Meadows fire department, and Maple Ridge bylaw also attended.

“Items discussed included over consumption of liquor, drinking and driving, and over crowding, all of which can have a serious threat to the overall safety of citizens in our communities,” said Dunlop.

“Ridge Meadows RCMP continue to support this initiative, and encourage any liquor-licence holder to join.”
