December 24 . Christmas Haven is at The ACT, 11944 Haney Pl., at 6 p.m. It includes a turkey dinner and a gift from Santa, and is open to everyone regardless of age, religion, or ethnicity. December 28 . Wendy Biscuit and her Dirty Swing Band will be at the Kingfisher's Waterfront Grill, 23840 River Rd., from 8 p.m. to midnight. This critically acclaimed local chanteuse performs old-time swing and jump blues plus a collection of her own original music. Joining Biscuit will be VSO saxophone player Jack Stafford and Montreal-born boogie-woogie pianoman Dave Webb.

January 5, 6, 12 & 13 . Ridge Meadows Search & Rescue holds its tree chipping event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 23598 105th Ave. Chipping is by donation.

January 8 . Coquitlam Prostate Cancer Support and Awareness Group invites Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents to their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. in the Coquitlam Pinetree Community Centre. All those involved with prostate problems are encouraged to come and share their concerns and experiences in a strictly confidential atmosphere. There is no charge (donations are accepted).

January 10 . The regular monthly meeting of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Chapter of HUB: Your Cycling Connection will be held from 6: 45 to 8: 45 p.m. in the Greenside Room at the Maple Ridge Library.

January 10 . The SFU Philosophers' Cafe meets at The ACT, 11944 Haney Pl. at 7 p.m. This month's topic: Are we entering a new dark age or going through a transitional time? Are there signs of an emergent vitality that might not be noticed amidst the destruction of old forms?

January 18 & 19 . The Wizard of Oz, put on by the musical theatre group of the Bergthorson Academy of Music, is coming to the main stage at The ACT, 11944 Haney Pl. on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. and Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are available at The ACT and are $12 in advance, four for $40, or $15 at the door.

Hospital lottery . A trip worth $8,400 along the B.C. coastline is the prize in the second annual Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation lottery. Tickets are $10 each or $25 for three, and are available at the Billy Miner Pub, as well as Witch of Endor, Office, and Outpost liquor stores.
