Dear Editor, My name is Matthew, and I am 24-yearold gay man currently living in Maple Ridge. I felt disgusted to have read such a letter by Mr. Dell Krauchi [Call me anti-gay not homophobic, Aug. 13, The TIMES]. As a human being, we are all taught to respect one another. I'm not sure about where Mr. Krauchi comes from or what religious beliefs he has but Canada is an accepting country for whomever and whatever you are.
Now, if we compare this to the likes of the Russian Winter Games, it's starting to feel like the Nazis when the 1936 Olympics were in Berlin.
Hitler saw the Games as an opportunity to promote his government and ideals of racial supremacy. In a Nazi party paper, the Völkischer Beobachter, he wrote in the strongest terms that Jews and black people should not be allowed to participate in the Games.
Now getting back to why Mr. Krauchi believes he is being discriminated [against], you're not! You are being ignorant.
I understand that since you've been a "young lad," you have gone through a lot of change, but I would like to introduce you to the present.
In 1969, the word homophobia was created to express the irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals.
Now I am not religious so I will not speak to what I do not know.
Saying that members of the gay community and the "so-called gender disorders" belong in the same category as rapists and child pornographers is ludicrous.
We are people just like you trying to live a normal life. You are not being harassed or discriminated against. You are homophobic. Such a piece of writing is considered hate speech. I get that everyone has their own opinion and views on society but Mr. Krauchi. "Keep it to yourself!"
