Grace Teboekhorst, who was written up in The TIMES last week [Ride benefits young horse lover, Sept. 3, The TIMES] is being recognized today.
The youngster, who has a rare, chronic, and life-threatening kidney disease called nephrotic syndrome, is being crowned the 2013-14 Champion Child for B.C. Children’s Hospital.
The young transplant patient will represent the hospital in the Walmart Canada’s sponsored Champion program that honours remarkable children who have triumphed despite severe medical challenges.
Grace Teboekhorst has a gift from her father that few children receive from their parents – a kidney.
Grace suffers from an extremely rare disease that at three years old left her fighting for her life, and her kidneys badly damaged. Grace’s father, Dennis, was approved as her donor, and in August 2010, Grace received her new kidney and a chance at a healthy life.
Today, Grace still receives post-transplant care at BC Children’s Hospital, and she will need another kidney transplant in the future.
But for now, her family is focusing on the amazing year ahead as ambassadors for BC Children’s Hospital.
Grace will be interviewed and photographed during a press conference in Vancouver Tuesday morning.
“Serving as an ambassador for tens of thousands of kids treated each year at BC Children’s Hospital, Grace will travel with her family (parents Dennis and Melissa, and younger brother Calym) in October to Toronto, Ont. to meet up with the 11 other Canadian Champions and then onto Orlando, Fla. to join the 50 American Champions,” said the hospital foundation’s communication officer Joanna Newman..
The Champions aim to help raise awareness of the importance of children’s hospitals and the work done by caregivers and researchers at children’s hospitals across North America.
“We are grateful to Walmart Canada for sponsoring the Champions program again this year and look forward to working closely with them throughout the year,” said Teri Nicholas, president and CEO of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“Walmart Canada’s commitment to this program allows us to highlight remarkable kids, like Grace, each year as our hospital’s ambassador, bringing much-needed awareness to the cause and inspiring donations for sick children locally and across the country.”
