• Yuen’s Family Martial Arts will be hosting an Open Floor Bully Forum at 7 p.m. to discuss concerns about bullying and effective ways to deal with it. This forum is open to anyone who may have questions, concerns, or wants solutions. At this forum Yuen’s will be presenting a program that deals effectively with conflict resolution called “Verbal Martial Arts.” The program is dedicated to creating continuity between children and parents to identify bullying situations early on and provide tools to create plans to best resolve the conflict. Volunteers needed

• The North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association is now preparing for their fall 2012 horseback riding program. They need volunteers to come forward to help groom and tack their horses and to lead or side walk with riders during their lesson. Horse experience is great but not required. This is the place for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, working with wonderful people of all abilities, and loves animals. A volunteer orientation session will be held on Sept. 9 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The fall session begins on Sept. 17.

Art show

• Love, Decay, Repair, an exhibit of hand-hooked rugs and surface design work by Michelle Sirois-Silver, opens at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery on Saturday, Sept. 8. A public reception will be held on Sept. 8 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Michelle Sirois-Silver explores the parallels between her fibre art work and the natural world, as she evokes the passage of decay, repair and renewal. On Sept. 15, Sirois-Silver will do a demo from 2 to 4 p.m. and talk on the rug hooking technique used for work in the exhibition Love, Decay, Repair. On Sept. 29 from 2 to 3 p.m., she will present a slide presentation and talk about the creative process behind the artist’s latest body of work.

• The TIMES and Ridge Meadows Recycling are looking for 40 community members under the age of 40 who are known for their environmentalism. Nomination deadline is midnight, Sunday, Sept. 30. They are also looking for donations of good quality children’s books for families to encourage reading at home and high interest magazines for adults to offer an informal lending library. A free Women’s English Group runs every Tuesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This group will give women with basic English skills an opportunity to meet over coffee and learn English with a trained TESL tutor.
