Roofing supplies left by workers caught fire and left a couple of businesses with water damage in Maple Ridge Friday night.

Two stores – one empty and one a wine store - in the strip mall at 20306 Dewdney Trunk Rd. sustained minimal fire damage but substantial water damage, said assistant fire chief Mark Smitton.

“Roofers were on the roof during the day and their tar pot caught fire. Luckily a passerby spotted the fire and called it in,” he said.

Ridge Meadows Staff Sgt. Mike Bhatti said the call came in at 10:40 p.m. and the fire was put out quickly.
