Whonnock Lake Day made its comeback and according to organizer Yukiko Tanaka, “it was smooth.”

The Whonnock Community Association hosted the allday event Sept. 18, after a two-year break.

“A few hundred people came I think, but we were not counting,” said Tanaka.

Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club put on the breakfast, followed by a community morning church service hosted by Cornerstone Church and by the time those were finished the weather had cleared up, according Tanaka.

“Outside was miserable at first, but by the time the breakfast and service let out it was dry,” said Tanaka.

The pony club hosted lunch and sold out of the corn on the cob and beef dip quickly.

There was a horse and buggy ride, B.C. freshwater Fisheries Society’s Go Fish program, Scouts demonstration, spinning demonstration by Whonnock Weavers and Spinners Guild, Fire Hall #2 demonstration, a magic show by Mike Norden, highland dancing by the Stave Falls Scottish Dancers, facepainting, a popcorn stand, and most impressive – an apple press with fresh apple juice provided by the Wildwood Fellowship Church in Whonnock.

There was live music all day in the park from locals Starr Jones Band, Wild Boys Band – both products of the Garibaldi Secondary – and Sharmaine and Luvena.

Local businesses set up tables to show and sell their products and for non-profit organizations to display information.

“I talked with several venders and they were quite happy with how it all went,” said Tanaka.

While many parts of Maple Ridge are becoming built up with new homes and subdivisions, Whonnock has retained its rural character, Tanaka said.
