Ridge Meadows RCMP have a plan ready for this year’s Pitt Meadows Day.

On Saturday, the local detachment will have officers on foot, on bikes, as well as motorcycles, and Sgt. Dave Smith and his horse Justice, present for the parade.

Auxiliary constables and community safety officers will be out to assist in keeping Pitt Meadows a safe and fun place.

“Ridge Meadows RCMP commit to keeping the citizens safe during this special event. We encourage all citizens to come out and enjoy the celebration,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop.

“Police will have a zero tolerance for anyone who acts in an unsafe manner, especially in regards to alcohol-related disturbances. All officers will take swift action if a violation of the Provincial Liquor Control and Licencing Act occurs. We want this to be a fun, enjoyable occasion,” she added.

Police fair in sight

RCMP are also getting ready for the second annual police fair on Sunday at the Valley Fair Mall in Maple Ridge.

On display will be police motorcycles, an incident command vehicle, and Sgt. Dave Smith and his horse.

“Scheduled to appear are RCMP Lower Mainland district emergency response team with the tactical armoured vehicle; and the explosives disposal unit and the robot that is used for disarming possible explosive devices,” said Dunlop.

The police fair will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include Child Find, which will be set up just outside of London Drugs – inside the mall.

Rider dodges hazard

Holy flying barbecues, Batman!

A 19-year-old Maple Ridge man was injured when a barbecue fell out of a delivery truck Saturday afternoon.

At about 2 p.m. on May 26 both a flat-deck delivery truck and a motorcycle were exiting from Golden Ears Way onto Lougheed Highway heading west towards Pitt Meadows when a barbecue flew off the back of the truck.

The motorcyclist tried to steer around the barbecue, but fell off his bike. He was taken to hospital, treated for injuries, and then released.

“The driver of the delivery truck was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for driving with an insecure load,” said Dunlop.

Police crack down

Police believe they have found heroin and crack cocaine during a traffic stop in Maple Ridge on Tuesday.

At 2:20 a.m. an 18-year-old Vancouver man was stopped as he drove west along Golden Ears Way in Maple Ridge.

The officer found cash and what police believe to be crack cocaine and heroin in the car and arrested the man. He was later released on a promise to appear in court in August 2012.

Police are recommending charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Power tools found

Police are trying to find the owner of about $1,000 worth of power tools.

At about 4 a.m. on Friday, May 25, an officer stopped a man on a bicycle in downtown Maple Ridge.

The man was carrying a bag that contained a number of power tools and power cords that police suspect were stolen.

“These tools do not appear to belong to the man who had possession of them, so we’re trying to see who the rightful owner may be. Ridge Meadows RCMP are putting this out in the hope the owner will come forward and identify their tools, so we can return them and take the suspect to court,” said Dunlop.

Police believe the theft would have happened between Monday, May 21 and Friday, May 25.
