Police and the coroner are continuing their investigation into the death of a young man from Pitt Meadows, who died while jogging in Stewart B.C.

At 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 1, Stewart RCMP responded to a report of a man who had fallen near the Canada/USA border on Highway 37A. Upon arrival a man was found unconscious lying on the rocky ocean shore about 30 feet below the edge of the roadway.

First Aid was provided by a witness, passers by, and paramedics, who quickly arrived on scene, said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk in a press release.

With assistance of a crane truck and basket the man was lifted back onto the roadway and taken to Stewart Hospital by ambulance. Despite their valiant efforts the 24-year-old man died as a result of his injuries.

From information gathered from witnesses, it appears the man was jogging westbound on the highway, when he observed a large truck approaching behind him and crossed the road to avoid it.

The man then jumped over a concrete barrier on the opposite side of the highway, perhaps not aware of the steep drop on the other immediate side of the barrier. The man then fell approximately 30 feet onto the rocks below, as the local tide was out at that time.

By request of the deceased man’s family his name is not being released at this time. Alcohol or drugs were not deemed to be factors and foul play is not suspected.
