The estranged wife of a Hells Angels member has been sentenced to one year in jail for assaulting two women – one of whom is her sister – outside Ridge Meadows Hospital.
In March, a B.C. Supreme Court jury found Shawna McCoach, 27, guilty of the assault of her sister, Brandi McCoach, and the aggravated assault of her former friend Amanda Dekok.
Shawna was nine months pregnant at the time of the attack.
She had approached Brandi, who had taken her own young son to the hospital for an examination, and stabbed her in the right hand with a large kitchen knife. McCoach then turned to Dekok and stabbed her in the right arm.
She then fled without helping either woman.
Brandi and Dekok were treated at Ridge Meadows Hospital. Dekok was transferred to Vancouver General for surgery on her arm because of a severed nerve.
At a sentencing hearing in Vancouver last week, Crown asked for jail time while McCoach’s defence lawyer suggested a suspended sentence and probation.
McCoach maintains that she was protecting her child at the time of the incident.
Lawyer Jim Vilvang told the judge that McCoach, who had become involved with the Hells Angels at age 18 through her cousin, recently split from her common-law husband Warner Gonzalez, who is a member of the Haney chapter of the Hells Angels.
McCoach’s sentence will be followed by two years of probation.
